‘Extreme Weight Loss’ shocker: Contestant kicked off show for bad behavior

Health Blog URL: http://blog.edtreatmentindia.com/

Don’t give Chris Powell any excuses and you won’t find yourself in the crosshairs of this talented trainer. The fans of “Extreme Weight Loss” on Tuesday night might find themselves feeling a bit uncomfortable as there isn’t a happy ending for one participant. According to WOTV on Tuesday, for the first time ever someone gets kicked off the show and it’s not going to be the best for one person who hoped to actually transform their life.

The first participant is Kenny a 410-pound man who was a former Marine. Kenny is a 35-year-old married father of three from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. According to the show, Kenny’s depression and weight issues became a real concern for him and his family. After severe tornadoes ripped through his hometown of Moore, Oklahoma Kenny realized how short life really is for everyone. Vowing to turn his life around once and for all, Kenny wrote a letter to trainer and transformation specialist Chris Powell asking for help.

The other contestant is Christy who is 380 pounds and looking to get fit. The 36 year-old participant has been overweight her entire life. Growing up in Las Vegas, Christy has been a victim of bullying in school and also lacked support of her family to lose weight and get healthy.. Now, a caretaker to her ailing mother, Christy doesn’t have a job or a boyfriend, and rarely leaves her house at all. Hoping to re-take control of her life, she wrote a letter to Chris asking for help.

The fans of “Extreme Weight Loss” have been wondering what could be such bad behavior on a reality show that a participant could be kicked off. While there are so many possibilities, viewers hope the scenario isn’t too embarrassing as people are looking to undergo transformations and sometimes the shock of a new environment is tough. Of course, everyone hopes for the best, but the ABC show has already warned everyone that a scandal on the show is going down (and viewers get to see it all play out too.)

UCLA Stem Cell Research May Lead To Improved Prostate Cancer Treatment

Researchers at UCLA’s Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research have made another breakthrough in the fight against prostate cancer. They found that two types of malignant prostate cancer cells can develop in one type of stem cell; thus, making prostate cancer stem cells a “moving target” for treatments. The researchers note that the finding could lead to new and improved treatments that can target prostate cancer cells. They published their findings online on November 26 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Stem Cell (Cancer Cell)

Adult stem cells are regenerative cells that replace diseased or damaged cells in organs. The researchers previously reported that prostate cancer can originate in basal type stem cells. The new study, based on that research, showed that tumors can start in basal stem cells that evolve to luminal cells that result in aggressive spread of the cancer and that these luminal cells can change in their characteristics over time; thus, making them resistant to treatment.

Study author Dr. Andrew Goldstein explained, “People have begun to think about cancers as being driven by stem cells in the same way that many of our adult organs are maintained by dedicated stem cells. Based on this new understanding, a lot of excitement surrounds the concept of going right to the root of the tumor and targeting those stem cells to eradicate the cancer.”

Patients with aggressive prostate cancer are often treated with anti-androgen (anti-male hormone) therapy; the basal stem cells that develop into the cancer cells look different from the luminal cells that maintain the aggressive disease. In addition, the tumor stem cells that are not destroyed by the anti-androgen treatment look different from the previous two. Because of this process, in order to develop an appropriate treatment, the researchers must identify cell types that evolve as the disease and its treatment develop. Now that the researchers have determined that prostate cancer stem cells can change what their appearance, he investigators are now searching for possible elements that are consistent within the stem cells and do not change through stem cell evolution.

They are of the opinion that this knowledge will help develop drugs that target the evolving cancer stem cells. Thus , they are now attempting to detect some of the factors that define a stem cell regardless of its external appearance. They stress that it is extremely important to understand the continual evolution of the stem cell’s physical appearance, particularly as tumors adapt to become resistant to new and more potent therapies.

Adopting a Healthy Lifestyle can Control or Reverse Heart Disease

The benefits of healthy habits are well established. These benefits include boosting mood, weight control and combating diseases. However, it is uncertain whether making health behavior changes as an adult can still alter coronary artery disease risk.

Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

To fin d out if making health behavior changes will change the risk of coronary artery disease, Dr. Bonnie Spring, PhD, professor in preventive medicine, Director, Center for Behavior and Health – Institute for Public Health and Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and lead investigator of this study along with colleges examined healthy lifestyle behaviors and coronary artery calcification and thickening among 3,538 young adults, aged 18 to 30 years and who had participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study.

Researchers evaluated five healthy lifestyle factors (not overweight/obese, low alcohol intake, healthy diet, physically active, nonsmoker) at baseline and 20 years later. The team tested whether change from year 0 to 20 in a continuous composite healthy lifestyle factors score is associated with atherosclerosis at 20 years.

After adjusting for demographics, medications, and baseline healthy lifestyle factors the results showed by 20 years 25.3% of the study participants had added at least one healthy lifestyle behavior.

Each increase in healthy lifestyle factors was associated with reduced odds of detectable coronary artery calcification and lower intima-media thickness – two major markers of cardiovascular disease that can predict future cardiovascular events.

Among participants 34.4% stayed the same.

In their conclusion the researchers write “Healthy lifestyle changes during young adulthood are associated with decreased risk and unhealthy lifestyle changes are associated with increased risk for subclinical atherosclerosis in middle age.”

According to Dr. Spring, “This finding is important because it helps to debunk two myths held by some health care professionals.” The first is that it’s nearly impossible to change patients’ behaviors. Yet, we found that 25 percent of adults made healthy lifestyle changes on their own. The second myth is that the damage has already been done – adulthood is too late for healthy lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of developing coronary artery disease. Clearly, that’s incorrect. Adulthood is not too late for healthy behavior changes to help the heart.”

The study also found that 40.4 % of participants had fewer healthy lifestyle factors and gained more bad habits as they aged. Each decrease in healthy lifestyle factor had greater odds of coronary artery calcification (odds ratio=1.17; 95% confidence interval, 1.02–1.33) and greater intima-media thickness (β=+0.020, P<0.01).

“It’s not too late,” comments Dr. Spring. “You’re not doomed if you’ve hit young adulthood and acquired some bad habits. You can still make a change and it will have a benefit for your heart.”

“If you don’t keep up a healthy lifestyle, you’ll see the evidence in terms of your risk of heart disease,” said Dr. Spring.

According to Dr. Spring the healthy changes people in the study made are attainable and sustainable. She offers some tips for those who want to embrace a healthy lifestyle at any age:

Burn Your Fat & Control Healthy Body Weight
  • Keep a healthy body-weight
  • Don’t smoke
  • Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity five times a week
  • No more than one alcoholic drink a day for women, no more than two for men
  • Eat a healthy diet, high in fiber, low in sodium with lots of fruit and vegetables
  • This study is published in the journal Circulation.

Smart Insulin Patch Could Provide Painless Blood Glucose Control For Diabetics

Biomedical engineers and diabetes doctors from the University of the North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine and North Carolina State have developed an insulin patch that is capable of detecting increases in blood sugar levels and secreting insulin doses into the bloodstream when needed. The research was announced on June 22, 2015, and was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Smart Insulin Patch to Give Diabetics Respite from Insulin Shots

The patch is a thin square no larger than a penny. It contains more than 100 tiny needles that are approximately the size of eyelash. The “microneedles” contain microscopic storage units for insulin. The units contain enzymes that sense glucose levels and rapidly release insulin when blood sugar levels become too high. The microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface to tap into the blood flow through the capillaries just below the skin surface. In a mouse model of type 1 diabetes, the patch lowered blood glucose for up to nine hours.

We have designed a patch for diabetes that works fast, is easy to use, and is made from nontoxic, biocompatible materials,” said co-senior study author Zhen Gu, PhD, a professor in the Joint UNC/NC State Department of Biomedical Engineering. “The whole system can be personalized to account for a diabetic’s weight and sensitivity to insulin so we could make the smart patch even smarter.”

While the approach does show great promise, researchers say that more pre-clinical tests and subsequent clinical trials are needed before the patch can be administered to human patients. “Injecting the wrong amount of medication can lead to significant complications like blindness and limb amputations, or even more disastrous consequences such as diabetic comas and death,” John Buse, MD, PhD, co-author of the study and the director of the UNC Diabetes Care Center.

Researchers gave one set of mice a standard insulin injection and measured blood glucose levels that returned to normal and then quickly rose into the hyperglycemic range. They tested another set of mice with the patch and observed that blood glucose levels were brought under control within thirty minutes and stayed level for several hours. The researchers also found that the patch could be fine-tuned to change blood glucose levels in a certain range by changing the dose of the enzyme contained in each microneedle. They found the patch was not as hazardous as insulin injections, which can cause blood glucose levels to plummet to dangerously low levels if administered too often.

The hard part of diabetes care is not the insulin shots, or the blood sugar checks, or the diet but the fact that you have to do them all several times a day every day for the rest of your life, said Buse, the director of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute and past president of the American Diabetes Association. “If we can get these patches to work in people, it will be a game changer.”

Blood Glucose Levels Meter

Researchers speculate that the patch’s ability to stabilize blood sugar in human patients could last longer than in mice because mice are less sensitive to insulin than humans. Gu said that their goal is to develop a smart insulin patch that only needed to be changed every few days.

Loud music puts a billion young people at risk for deafness

We all love our iPods and MP3 players. But recently a great number of audiologists have signaled the warning that the decibel level at which young people, that is those in the age range of 12 to 35, are increasingly at risk for going deaf.

The World Health Organization recently published a study which concluded that “1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices.” Add to that the threat posed by excessively loud concerts and other venues, like sporting events, dance clubs and bars, and it creates a perfect storm of conditions to deprive young people of their hearing very early in life.

One billion young at risk of hearing loss from loud music

Source: HEALTH AND WELLNESS BLOG INDIA

Although the study was completed in February, the news only made it to the media this week. All the major main stream media outlets ran stories about the WHO findings. Until recently deafness was a problem for children in underdeveloped who were susceptible to ear infections which if not treated properly lead to diminished hearing and even deafness.

But now the problem of deafness in young people has moved to the richest most developed nations. In 2014 the National Institutes of Health published a warning about what it called “noise induced hearing loss.” Few paid any attention to the warning until the media picked up on the findings of WHO.

It all goes back to decibel levels

The WHO study, and most of the media coverage, has zeroed in on ear buds as a leading culprit of hearing loss. Unlike older ear phones which covered the ear, the newer ear buds sit directly in the ear canal. The closer the proximity to the stereocilia, the little hairs that ultimately carry electrical signals to the brain, the more quickly the stereocilia is damaged. Once damaged, hearing loss is likely to be permanent.

According to most experts, including WHO and the NIH, 85 decibels is the safest, loud level at which sound should be transmitted. 85 decibels is approximately the sound of heavy traffic. An MP3 player at maximum volume can generate over 100 decibels which is comparable to concerts, dance clubs and sporting events.

Even everyday items should be considered dangerous. Ear protection is recommended before using a lawn mower, leaf blower or even riding a motorcycle.

Timing is also critical

While the decibel level indicates sounds which may cause damage, one must also put the amount of exposure time into the equation. A short burst of sound, say a firecracker or a gun firing, has a high decibel level, but it may be less damaging then long time exposure to sounds with slightly lower decibel levels. WHO recommends that at 85 decibels, exposure to the sound should be limited to 8 hours a day.

Perhaps the most troubling problem will be disconnecting young people from ear buds which are used continually during the day and even worn to bed at night.

Apple and other manufacturers have offered apps which allow parents to set decibel levels on phone and audio players. But even with levels set low, there should be frequent breaks from the constant sound.

The WHO estimates that throughout the world at least 350 million people have “moderate to profound hearing loss.” Almost half of these are a result of disease or genetic conditions. But 50% of the remaining hearing losses are deemed avoidable.

Education as to the dangers must be made available soon and regularly before an entire generation losses the ability to hear.
